New Dog
Aug 4th, 2009 by
I finally found a new dog. It took me awhile and didn’t go as I’d envisioned. I tried out two dogs before finding the right one. Don’t worry both of them got good homes. It was my fault. Bear said he wanted a boy dog, about half his size, and I just didn’t listen. The two dogs I tried out were both girls and both teeny. Bear said they weren’t really dogs, they were more like cats to him, and he wasn’t interested in any more cats. I kept looking for a dog. You’d think it would be easy to find a boy dog, medium sized, good with cats, other dogs, and people. Not really. When I finally gave up and stopped looking, almost immediately two friends told me about dogs that needed homes. Bear and I checked them out and one was a litttle boy dog, half Bear’s size, who we decided to adopt. Bear liked him.

When I saw the dog I instantly thought his name should be Norman (he was called Lucky). This is not my normal M.O. Usually I spend a week hunting for a  name and then end up changing it at least once, but he really seems like a Norman. It fits. I was told he was part Beagle and Blue Tick Hound, but I am starting to suspect some Bassett in there somewhere. Rather than tell you what I know about him and his past, or how things are going now that he’s home with me, why don’t you check with him yourself. Next week I will give you a full report. Practice makes perfect! If you want to see more pictures of him, I have an album on Facebook.
YOUR STORIES
This is a note sent from a student, Sonia Timmons, about her success with animal communication.Â
Hi Marta. I attended your animal communications class back in June. Since our “person” count was odd, I volunteered to read Miles, your kitty. Luckily, I did well and got 24 correct and 5 WOW points. I am writing to tell you how much I enjoyed the class and how much skepticism I have encountered from family and friends who  just don’t believe in intuitive communication, especially with animals. Soooooo, I worked to make a few people start to believe. My favorite story is about my boyfriend’s sister and her two-year-old cat Mitsy. I don’t know the type of cat she is, but she’s supposed to be the type that doesn’t shed much and is hypo-allergenic. She’s always been kind of “stand offish,”  not much of a lap cat, and not one to be held or loved on too much. She is especially camera shy. She stays to herself and just watches from a distance. She didn’t act scared, she just wasnt interested.Â
Well, after I got so much negative attitude from Mitsy’s mom I decided to have a talk with Mitsy. Right away, she walked up to me and was rolling over for me to pat her. She told me that she didn’t like the name Mitsy and that was why she hardly ever went to anyone. She also told me that she felt she was a princess and she wanted a collar to reflect her “royalty”. Basically she wanted some bling, and once I explained what that was, she agreed. Well, Mitsy’s mom was still doubtful but wondered why Mitsy and I had such a good relationship.I told Mitsy’s mom to get her a rhinestone collar, a pretty pink or red one with white stones. She went for the experiment and purchased one the following week. The next time I went over to visit, Mitsy had her collar on and ran over to show it off to me. I asked her if I could take some pictures of her and she said YES! She said she never wanted pictures before because she wasn’t “dressed”. Needless to say, Mitsy’s mom is a true believer now! And Mitsy is no longer Mitsy, her new name is DIVA. She loves it. Diva will jump in our laps now and loves to be loved on. And she will actually POSE for the camera. Its great!Â

Does Norman like to chase rabbits (not eat them, just chase them), yellow balls and popcorn?
Just curious.
Chris
Hi Chris
Well he would chase rabbits if he could and he probably wouldn’t eat them. As far as yellow balls and popcorn goes I dont know. I dont have either … but he may have in the past.
Hmm. I got a picture of a softish green plastic feeding bowl that he likes a lot, and agree about the rabbits, it may be his obsession to catch one! Also that he came from a family of five people and they moved , or there was another animal (black?) he didn’t get on with, or both.
Anything close???
He’s a super dog, very handsome, self reliant, and very intelligent. Got that he wants a good job, he’s very capable, maybe he was too capable for his last family, or his actions misunderstood. He could be a good ratter if he can divert his rabbit interest a bit. Better warn any rats nearby!
Marta,
If you can, can you send me the code or link for that photo with the black cat with the caption about holy water? That is great. I would like to put that on my site somewhere. Thanks.
Hi Jackie
will do
Hi Jane
I will comment next blog and give feedback on your findings. I want to give people a chance to check before commenting.
soon grasshopper
I get that Norman’s family moved away and left him. He was picked up and displaced in another location. He is kinda “matter of fact” & doesn’t expect much but very happy to receive love & attention. Reassurance is beneficial for Norman. He doesn’t relay much about his new home yet because he just feels a little uneasy from past experience. He likes his new collar & your fried chicken.
Re: your ‘looking for just the right dog’. I found that each of the five doggies that lived with us ‘came’ to us. I didnt go looking for them. They were more or less ‘dropped in my lap’….and it was perfect.!
Overall, I get the feeling Norman is a friendly dog and likes people. He has a very sensitive nose (meaning he loves to pick up scents) and at times just does not seem to hear very well (I believe this may in fact be due to not wanting to listen to come when called…).
He pulls quite hard when walked on the lead, dislikes being tied up (this may have happened at his previous home), is definitely not keen on visits to the vet, quite sensitive around his paws (clipping nails?).
He loves fresh bones/meat, likes his new buddy Bear, is not keen on rain. He barks (a lot?)…
His nose dictates his moves, and he loves to chase squirrels? up the trees and then to sit and wait for them.
I ask how his health is and the only thing I can pick up is that his spine feels a bit stiff. Something about a car accident comes in, but not sure if he was actually involved.
He seems to settle in well, but he does bark (too) much? He calls Bear his big brother and they seem to get on fine. I see them play tug with something. He mentions the cat(s), which he does not mind, but is not overly friendly with (yet). I ask him his age and get about 3 years old. He seems a bit older to me in the picture, but experience has taught me by now that I am pretty hopeless with figures…
I see Bear and Norman sleep opposite each other (on a cushion?)
His past family (I think there were (two) children), moved away, perhaps a divorce and a new home was needed for Norman.
He says you made the right choice in getting him and he wants to help you with your work.
Norman tells me he is 5 years old and people say he looks very strong and handsome boy. He loves to have his photo taken.
He seems to tell me that he loves water and digging and play with balls and sticks. He is generally a very playful boy, loves Bear and family cats, sleeps side by side with Bear in his green bed with blanket.
He can be a little shy with strangers but loves children.
Norman says he came to Bear to share is joy and he is very happy.
Hi Midori
Norman does like Bear and the cats and he likes playing and balls and likes to dig LOL. He and Bear get on the couch which has a green cover on it. He is fine with kids.
